One person was killed and another injured by a stray bullet in Aboabo number 2, a suburb of Asokore Mampong municipality in the Ashanti region this morning.
The late 16-year-old Gafaru Kassim and the injured were reportedly shot dead by a stranger as a group of young men brandished guns as part of the Eid celebrations.
Both were sent to the government hospital in Manhyia where Gafaru Kassim was pronounced dead.
The injured man, whose name is still unknown, is being treated in hospital. The family of the deceased have not yet accepted the situation.
Kassim’s uncle, Sulemana Umah, says the family is preparing to bury their relative according to Islamic customs and therefore are waiting for the hospital to release the body.
Meanwhile, all outdoor Eid celebrations in the region have been suspended in accordance with Covid-19 safety protocols.
Asokore Mampong municipal executive chief Alhaji Alidu Seidu said, “Before now, I issued a statement somewhere during Eid-ul-Fitr saying that we are still not normal. “
“The Covid is still with us. The new wave of covid is still with us on the basis that social distancing assurance and other safety protocols are still in effect, ”he added.
Regarding the shooting, he said, police have been deployed to areas where suspects involved in the shooting may be hiding.
Police say they have opened an investigation into the incident.
