Police deny assault allegations against Kumasi Girls SHS students during riots

The Ashanti Regional Police Command has denied allegations that staff deployed to Kumasi Girls’ High School assaulted students.

Some students had previously claimed to have been beaten by a joint police and military team deployed to the school to quell a campus rampage on Monday evening after being denied a mid-term break.

According to the students, the security guards assaulted them even when they retreated to their dormitories.

“We broke Veronica’s buckets but we didn’t destroy any other property. We were there and soldiers and police came and started whipping us not with canes but with sticks. When you’re even lying on your bed, they pull you down and start beating us, ”one student said. JoyNews.

But in an interview, Acting Regional Police Commander DCOP David Agyemang Adjem refuted allegations that security personnel used force to calm the students.

“It would be reckless for a policeman or soldier to enter a girl’s dormitory and attack her. No, I don’t think that’s true. But the information I had was that the students were unruly and had destroyed school property.

“So we sent Operation Calm Life, made up of both police and military officers, to get to the school. We went there and talked to the students to calm down and that’s why we have calm in the school. If we had gone to attack them, I am sure they would not have gone to their dormitories, ”he stressed.

Meanwhile, Ashanti region minister Simon Osei-Mensah said an investigation would be conducted into the allegations.

“According to the briefing given to me this morning, I have not heard of any case of assault. You know the students, even if you push them in, will come back and say they’ve been assaulted.

“But I will go there and witness it myself to check if a student has been assaulted and to what extent it was done,” he said. JoyNews.
