Lady Louise Windsor could become a Princess Royal in a matter of months, as the Queen’s granddaughter approaches her eighteenth birthday.
Lady Louise Windsor could be 15th in the royal line of succession, even sitting above the Queen’s second child, Princess Anne, but she is currently not entitled to princess style. The parents of Lady Louise, Prince Edward and Sophie, Countess of Wessex are said to be the Queen’s “favorites” and were married in a beautiful ceremony in 1999. When the royal couple married, the Queen conferred on them their current titles of Earl and Countess of Wessex.
A statement from Buckingham Palace released at the time also confirmed that their future children would be labeled children of an earl, not a prince. This meant that their daughter Lady Louise and their son James, Viscount Severn, did not automatically become a princess and prince when they were born. However, that could all change this fall, as Lady Louise celebrates her eighteenth birthday on November 8.
Although currently referred to as the daughter of an earl, the letters patent issued in 1917 and still in force today indicate that princely status and the style of royal highness are awarded to all grandchildren of the male line of ‘a monarch.

As the Queen’s daughter via her youngest son Prince Edward, it is understood that Louise could technically pose as a princess after she turns eighteen. Her mother, Sophie, Countess of Wessex, has, however, already spoken about her and Prince Edward’s decision to leave that choice to Louise and James.
In an interview with The Sunday Times earlier this year, Sophie explained, “We try to educate them knowing that they will most likely have to work for a living.”
“This is why we made the decision not to use RHS titles,” she continued. “They have them and may decide to use them after 18, but I think that’s highly unlikely.”
While the Countess of Wessex might consider it “unlikely” that her children would continue to use their princely titles on a regular basis, Lady Louise could technically become HRH Princess Louise, in the same way that her cousins Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie are. known.

It comes amid rumors that her uncle, Prince Charles and Prince Edward, are caught in a ‘royal rift’ over the title of Duke of Edinburgh. Following Prince Philip’s death at Windsor Castle in April, the title passed to Prince Charles.
However, prior to Edward and Sophie’s marriage in 1999, it was also announced that in addition to becoming Earl of Wessex, Edward would one day take on the title of Duke of Edinburgh. Now, speculation has arisen after claims were recently made that the title may not be passed on from Prince Charles as expected.
It is still officially unclear who might receive this prestigious title in the future, as Prince Edward’s daughter Lady Louise Windsor now reflects on the big decision whether or not to use her HRH style.
