Although Marvel and the X-Men Hellfire Gala was to culminate with the grand unveiling of the newly terraformed planet of mutants, the evening unexpectedly became the stage for the first major, and apparently permanent death from one of the most controversial family members of the X-Men (once deleted): the scarlet witch. Thanks to Comic-Con @ Home 2021, we’ve learned a little bit about what’s to come.

We still don’t know who killed Wanda Maximoff or if her death was murder, but the X-Men and a number of other Marvel characters are about to get to the bottom of what happened in the next Magneto test mini-series by writer Leah Williams and artist Lucas Werneck. Speaking on a panel at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con, Williams, who has previously written on Marvel’s X factor series, describes how Magneto’s trial will dig into what happened and how Wanda’s status as a big suitor still shapes the way the world views her. “So this is a murder investigation, and obviously Wanda has made a lot of enemies in Krakoa whether she intends to or not, ”said Williams. “It’s just kind of a by-product of his traumatic past.”

This Wanda come die right after showing up at the Hellfire Gala to reconcile with Magneto—her distant adoptive father—IImmediately it looked like he may have played a part in her death. Canonically, Wanda and her twin brother Pietro are still not mutants, which means that even if Magneto buried the hatchet with them, they wouldn’t exactly be welcome in Krakoa.

The fact that the X-Men have recently embarked on the important and top-secret Resurrection of People activity could affect what happens to Wanda down the line. But Williams also explained how his death and the Magneto test are going to pose difficult challenges for the mutants, who have worked very hard to keep some of their tech hidden from the public. “This is a very thorough review of the proceedings of the first high-profile Krakoa murder investigation which is attracting a lot of outside attention and threatening a lot of Krakoa secrets and a lot of Krakoa peace,” Williams said. “It’s also an in-depth look at, you know, the dynamic House of M. It’s called Magneto test, and the ordeal has more than one meaning.

While Williams did not go into detail on what sorts of “trials and tribulations” Magneto would go through on literal and metaphorical mediums, she did point out that at this point in the Marvel Comic Book Universe, Wanda is still widely regarded as a sort of bogeyman. Some of that boogeyman energy will likely be part of Steve Orlando and Cian Torney’s next film. Darkhold Alpha # 1, featuring the Scarlet Witch who also fights to get her hands on the Mystic Tome. In Magneto’s trial, however, it will be interesting to see the iconic anti-villain having to grapple with this latest example of his family falling apart.

Magneto’s trial # 1 hits stores August 18.
