Biafra: Nnamdi Kanu’s arrest causes cracks, leadership crisis at IPOB

The indigenous people of Biafra, IPOB, are said to have witnessed cracks in their hierarchy following the re-arrest of the group’s leader, Nnamdi Kanu, DAILY POST reported.

Kanu, who fled Nigeria in 2017 following his treason trial, was arrested again last month in an African country believed to be Kenya.

The pro-Biafra agitator reportedly traveled to Kenya to receive cash donations for his secession mandate, before being arrested and repatriated to Nigeria.

DAILY POST discovered that Kanu and some of his closest allies were having problems controlling and managing IPOB’s finances, a situation that caused him to travel to embark on the trip to Kenya without their knowledge.

Kanu reportedly lost the confidence of his closest “generals” in their handling of IPOB’s finances, the reasons why he interrupted them before going to Kenya.

Crisis after Kanu’s arrest.

Sources within the IPOB, after Kanu’s re-arrest, pointed to an internal crisis within the pro-Biafra group.

In July 2021, a few weeks after Kanu’s arrest, Simon Ekpa was reportedly widely named as the agitator’s successor on Radio Biafra.

In a quick reaction, Emma Powerful, spokesperson for IPOB, debunked the claims. Powerful explained that Ekpa had been appointed reporter like the other broadcasters of the pro-Biafra platform (Radio Biafra).

A few weeks after Ekpa’s appointment, the group disassociated itself from the journalist due to alleged ideological differences.

Powerful, in a statement, Ekpa said he refused to sign certain documents in accordance with the directives of the pro-Biafra group.

Ideological differences

Prior to his arrest, Kanu had encouraged IPOB members to launch a more radical movement than their initial approach.

The leader of IPOB, during his broadcast on Radio Biafra, had repeatedly threatened that his supporters might resort to civil disobedience in their effort to update Biafra.

The so-called ideological question became evident when the former deputy head of IPOB, Uche Mefor, distanced himself from the alleged violence perpetrated by members of the pro-Biafra group.

Mefor accused Kanu of building a “culture of lies, deception and blackmail”, in reference to these destroyed lives that cannot speak for themselves.

He said, “See how they falsely label and destroy the character of people with impunity.

“When I said that what goes up must come down, I really meant it. Whatever someone sows, he will reap it.

“They will live to experience the same suffering they inflicted on vulnerable people who are unable to speak for themselves.

“The forces of heaven and earth will continue to work in dissonance and in a discordant pattern for all of you. Time will certainly tell.

IPOB’s response to suspected crack after Kanu’s arrest.

When DAILY POST asked for clarification on the alleged rift within the pro-Biafra group, group spokeswoman Emma Powerful insisted IPOB was intact.

In an exclusive conversation with our correspondent, Powerful stressed that there was no crisis within the group’s management.

According to Powerful: “There is no crack in IPOB, our leader Mazi Nnamdi Kanu built IPOB in solid rock. There is nothing anyone can do to undermine the determination of IPOB towards this divine fight for the freedom of Biafra. IPOB is intact and does not tremble.

“There is no problem with the leadership of IPOB and the members of IPOB around the world. “

Powerful also rejected Mefor’s requests, pointing out that he was no longer a member of IPOB.

He said: “Uche Mefor has resigned from IPOB; he is no longer a member of IPOB.

When asked why Mefor quit, Powerful replied, “Who resigned? Because we don’t know Uche Mefor, these are his personal decisions and we have nothing to say about it.

However, there are fears that Kanu may not regain his freedom or come out of his current situation alive.

The senior pastor of the Divine Mercy Church, Olatobiloba Peters, had recently said that he “saw Kanu in a coffin”.

In the midst of this prophecy, the head of the IPOB had shouted that his life was in danger while he remained in the care of the DSS.

In this context, Kanu’s lawyer, Ifeanyi Ejiofor, asked the court to transfer him to the Kuje prison.
