President Akufo-Addo said Ghana would resume its immunization program soon.
Calls for the government to resume its vaccination program have multiplied, following a spike in COVID-19 cases.
Speaking in a meeting with the outgoing Spanish Ambassador to Ghana, President Akufo-Addo said Ghana has purchased vaccines that will facilitate the government’s immunization program.
“The vaccine shortage has been a problem for countries like ours, but I hope we will see the light at the end of the tunnel very soon. We will begin the process of vaccinating or revaccinating our population. ”
The president’s assurance comes weeks after he said the country faced challenges with its immunization program due to the difficulty in accessing COVID-19 vaccines.
He explained that the global politics of manufacturing, supply and distribution make the situation even more difficult.
The president revealed that the government had assembled a team, led by the former Minister of Environment, Science and Technology, Professor Kwabena Frimpong Boateng, to work out the modalities that will see the production of vaccines in Ghana.
“We have obvious difficulties with the vaccination program. Unfortunately, we are victims of this global shortage of vaccines experienced by poor and less fortunate countries by not having access to vaccines. ”
Ghana COVID-19 Response Team Member, Dr. Bernard Okoé Boye said the government was exploring other possible options to obtain vaccines for the country.
“What is happening in Ghana is a global problem. So what we are doing is for this government to engage directly with other European countries that have stocks of AstraZeneca and do not deploy them that much. We will therefore continue to explore ”.
Ghana has so far administered 1,271,393 vaccines.
Of these, 865,422 people received the first vaccine while 405,971 received their second dose
