As of July 21, 2021, the number of confirmed cases of Covid-19 in Ghana reached 101,170, of which 96,255 people have recovered.
821 people have died from the novel coronavirus during the same period.
According to the Ghana Health Service website, this is the cumulative figure of all confirmed cases in the country since March 2020.
The website also revealed that about 26 of the 4,094 current active cases are severe while 15 people are in critical condition.
Ghana sets this new record at a time when the advent of the Covid-19 Delta strain is dragging the country into a third wave.
While the Greater Accra region continues to be the region with the highest number of recorded cases, the Savannah region is the region with the fewest recorded cases.
Lax enforcement of Covid-19 safety protocols in the country and blatant violations of the same protocols by government officials and a representative sample of Ghanaians have exacerbated efforts to reduce the country’s infection rate.
Speaking on JoyNews’ Newsfile on Saturday, Ghana Medical Association secretary Dr Justice Yankson said that regarding the very low number of people vaccinated in the country, it was prudent that protocols for safety of Covid-19 are strictly enforced and observed. .
He said that at present, health facilities responsible for handling Covid-19 cases are rapidly running out of beds for those infected.
Giving a breakdown, he said that in June, the GIDC only saw eight patients, however, the numbers rose dramatically in July to around 150 patients at the OPD level. Again, there are over 50 patients at HDU-ICU, among others.
Additionally, Korle-Bu University Hospital and other hospitals are struggling to find places where patients can receive treatment.
“If you look at all the statistics, you will see that the wave is here with us. We haven’t reached his peak, but he’s here with us, ”Dr Yankson said.
Also on Newsfile, Dr Kwame Sarpong Asiedu, pharmacist and member of the Ghana Center for Democratic Development (CDD-Ghana), urged Ghanaians to adhere religiously to Covid-19 security protocols in the country.
As the country prepares for a third wave of the pandemic, he said it was now more urgent than before to adhere to the protocols.
