Ace broadcaster with Onua TV and Onua FM, Captain Smart said former Special Prosecutor Martin Amidu performed appallingly while in office.
In Captain Smart’s opinion, President Akufo-Addo’s appointment of Mr. Amidu as special prosecutor was even a mistake because he knew that the former attorney general under the Mills administration was not going to keep his promises.
Speaking on the Onua Maakye Morning broadcast before Mr. Kissi Agyebeng was selected as special prosecutor, Captain Smart said, “I predicted that Kissi Agyebeng would be appointed special prosecutor even when Amidu was not appointed. not yet resigned. A lot of people asked me if I knew Amidu was going to leave the post.
“Martin Amidu failed. From the first day he was appointed, I said that Nana Addo had made a mistake in appointing him.
Mr Amidu resigned on Monday, November 16 after citing a number of reasons, including interference by the president, an allegation the president denied.
He stated in his letter to the President: “It is essential for me to state for record purposes, and contrary to public perceptions, that my letter of appointment was received on February 5, 2020 (almost two (2) years after my appointment).
“The recipients of the copy have made no effort to honor any of the conditions of appointment in terms of emoluments and advantages of the appointment since my appointment mandate was issued on February 23, 2018 on the date of my resignation letter. The Deputy Special Prosecutor has also not received emoluments since her appointment, and there is a need to rectify this situation for her now that I am on the sidelines.
“The events of November 12, 2020 removed my only protection against threats and plans intended for me to undertake the Agyapa Royalties Limited Transactions Anti-Corruption Assessment Report and require me to immediately resign from my post as special prosecutor.
“I should not normally announce my resignation to the public myself but the traumatic experience that I lived from October 20, 2020 to November 2, 2020 when I transmitted in a letter of thirteen (13) pages the conclusions and observations on the risk analysis of corruption and anti-corruption assessment on the transaction report of Agyapa Royalties Limited and other matters relating to the President as Chairman of the National Security Council puts warn against not bringing my resignation as special prosecutor immediately to the knowledge of the Ghanaian public and the world.
“The reaction I received for daring to produce the Agyapa Royalties Limited Transactions anti-corruption report convinces me beyond a reasonable doubt that I did not intend to exercise any independence as a special prosecutor in the prevention, investigation, prosecution and recovery of assets of corruption. My position as special prosecutor has therefore become clearly untenable. “
Following his resignation, Mr. Kissi Agyebeng, also a private lawyer, was appointed the new special prosecutor.
It was examined by the Parliament’s Appointments Committee on Thursday 23 July.
During his screening, Mr. Agyebeng said that it would not be possible for him to stop corruption in Ghana.
On the contrary, he said, if approved by Parliament, it will make the practice a high-risk activity in order to deter people from engaging in it.
“There is no way I can stop the corruption, God himself will not cheer it up. I will make corruption expensive, a high-risk activity, ”he said.
He added, “I’m going to institute what I call a push for progress. It will be a systemic review of public bodies.
Captain Smart said he believed Mr. Agyebeg would perform his duties.
“I have been following Kissi Agyebeng’s exploits for a very long time and I know he can deliver,” he said.
