A senior adviser to President Akufo-Addo, Gabby Otchere Darko, accused the drafters of the anti-LGBTQI bill of putting Ghana on the blacklist as a country promoting hatred against a minority group.

Speaking to her Twitter page, Gabby tweeted that “this bill serves only one purpose: to blacklist Ghana for promoting hatred!”

The controversial bill was introduced by a private citizen and subsequently received support from some MPs, including Ningo Prampram MP Sam George.

Economic Fighters League leader Ernesto Yeboah called the arrest shameful. He wonders how bringing these people together to discuss their sexuality amounts to a crime.

“It’s quite a shame that in Ghana people are criminalized because of their sexuality. Now, why is talking about it a crime? He fumed.

The 21 people, including 16 women and five men, were taken into police custody on Friday, May 21, 2021.

Reactions are pouring in on social media following the arrest of 21 members of the gay community by police in the Volta region.

According to a statement from the Volta Regional Command of the Ghana Police Service, the suspects were remanded in custody after being brought to court for unlawful assembly.
