Imani Ghana President Franklin Cudjoe said the report released by the Noguchi Memorial Institute on COVID-19 was scary.

He therefore asked the public to respect all the protocols described to deal with the virus.

The Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research (NMIMR) COVID-19 response team confirmed in a statement over the weekend that the new variant of COVID-19, which the research institute began testing in April, spreads faster.

In a brief communication on the strain, the team said their testing observations also revealed that the transmission of the new variant is directly related to the shedding of the virus in droplets during sneezing and coughing, “this which also determines the propagation by speaking, singing and other related activities ”.

Since the registration of the new strain, confirmed cases in Ghana have risen from more than 90,000 cases in April, with the total confirmed cases currently standing at over 101,000.

Recoveries and discharges have slowed due to viral loads from the new variant.

“It has been observed that positive individuals take longer to clear the virus,” the NMIMR response team said in its brief communication dated Saturday, July 24.

He therefore calls on the government to “re-examine the state of compliance with the Covid-19 prevention protocols and the appropriate restrictions”.

Commenting on this in a tweet, Mr Cudjoe said, “Noguchi just released a spooky update on the Delta variant of covid-19. Don’t wait for the President to tell you to follow the protocols.
