The late and great Robin Williams stepped down as Howard the Duck because he felt creatively limited in trying to match the animatronic duckbill.
The late and great actor Robin Williams has resigned Howard the duck after only three days of filming. Howard the duck was the first major attempt to make a movie based on a Marvel comic book character and hit theaters on August 1, 1986. Although it was produced by George Lucas at the height of his Star wars and Indiana Jones popularity, the film was a critical and box office disappointment that was often put on many worst comic book adaptation lists.
A person who realized that the writing was on the wall for Howard the duck was Williams himself. At the time famous for his role in the hit series, Mork and Mindy, Williams was a popular comedian who would go on to have a successful family film series in the 1990s with Aladdin, Mrs. Doubtfire, and Jumanji, Just to name a few. The actor was known for his improvisational skills and energetic performances that would inspire a whole generation of comedic actors. Considering that Julliard’s classmate and close friend of Williams, Christopher Reeve, was famous for the role of Superman, it had some sort of comedic cosmic sense that Williams would be playing a role in the first film of the DC comic book contestants. , Howard the duck.
However, Robin Williams was cast as Howard the Duck for just three days before leaving the role. According to THRHoward the Duck voice actor Chip Zien revealed that Williams was gone due to his frustration at trying to sync his lines with the Animatronic Duck Bill. As no voice actor was chosen to play Howard at the start of production, the puppeteers read the lines with a bland delivery that limited the style of fast-paced improvisation for which Williams was known. Zien remembers what he was told about the situation:
“What I was told was that on the third day Robin said, ‘I can’t do this. This is insane. I can’t keep up with the pace. I am confined. duckbill flying.
Zien would ultimately replace Williams as the voice of Howard the Duck. Many would argue that Williams made the right choice to quit the project as it was a low grade on the resumes of many involved. Williams’ career did not suffer much, however, as the following year he starred in Good morning Vietnam, and two years later would play in Circle of Missing Poets, showcasing his lineup as a dramatic actor. There did not seem to be any hard feelings between Williams and Howard the duck producer, George Lucas, because Williams was going to star in the films of two of Lucas’s closest friends: Steven Speilberg To hang up in 1991 and that of Francis Ford Coppola Jack in 1996.
On August 1, 2014, 28 years after his first and only solo film, Howard the Duck returned to the big screen with an appearance in guardians of the galaxy. Sadly, ten days later the world would lose Robin Williams as he passed away at the age of 63. Williams left behind a legacy of awesome movies that continues to endure as generation after generation comes to discover them, and the legacy lives on in the remaking of Aladdin and the consequences of Jumanji.
