Bishop Emmanuel Chukwuma, Church of Enugu Ecclesiastical Province of Nigeria, Anglican Communion, said he had no part in the arrest and repatriation of Nnamdi Kanu, Chief of the Indigenous Peoples of Biafra, IPOB, Nigeria .

Chukwuma said he has firmly maintained a dignified stance on justice and fair play in governance at all levels for the Igbo nation.

The Nigerian government recently arrested and repatriated the leader of the IPOB from an unknown African country.

Kanu’s arrest will not affect the unrest in Biafra, a referendum still needed – Groupe Nord

Kanu was repatriated to Nigeria to continue his treason trial in the Abuja Federal High Court headed by Judge Binta Nyako.

After his arrest, IPOB named Archbishop Chukwuma among those allegedly plotting with the Nigerian government to betray his ailing leader.

Reacting, the clergyman said involving him in the heinous act of Kanu’s kidnapping and repatriation was a joke taken too far.

In a statement he signed and handed to reporters in Enugu, Chukwuma said linking him to such an act was laughable, reprehensible and very unfortunate.

Further rejecting such a claim, Chukwuma recalled having defended the IPOB against the terrorist label of the Nigerian government.

He said: “I was stunned by a recent report credited to the Indigenous Peoples of Biafra (IPOB).

“In said report, it was alleged that I was part of the plot which led to the kidnapping and repatriation of IPOB chief Nnamdi Kanu to Nigeria.

“Ordinarily, I would have ignored said report for lack of substance, but it would have sparked different narratives and unhealthy speculation in the minds of Nigerians.

“A commentary is therefore deemed necessary for posterity.

“In my privileged position as a religious leader, I have vehemently maintained a stoic and dignified position on justice and fair play in governance at all levels, and respect for due process and constitutionality while seeking justice for the oppressed.

“This is addressed in different ways in different forums. My position has not changed because it is in line with my beliefs and stated convictions.

“The report should be rejected by discerning minds because it is the product of troublemakers and disgruntled elements.

“I strongly condemned the reference to IPOB as a terrorist organization, but rather as a group of non-violent agitators.”
