2022 Honda NSX Type S will be the swan song of the mid-engined supercar

Well folks, good news and bad news. The 2022 Honda NSX will finally receive an S-Type model, after the sporty badge returned to the North American TLX sedan market earlier this year. But sadly, the NSX Type S will mark the end of the second-generation mid-engined supercar lineup, which officially rolls out of production in December 2022.

Honda doesn’t have much information on the NSX Type S yet, but the vehicle will debut on August 13 at The Quail, A Motorsports Gathering (as part of Monterey Car Week). A few teaser images of the vehicle betrayed a few key differences between the S-Type and its quieter sibling. One immediately notices a red engine cover, which has long been a hallmark of performance-oriented Honda and Honda products. The sharper NSX also sports dark exterior accents, like matte black door handles and a glossy black rear spoiler, and there’s a large Type S logo on the sill right in front of the rear wheels.

The current Honda NSX went on sale for the 2017 model year, powered by a standard hybrid powertrain and the automaker’s unique torque vectoring All-Wheel Drive (SH-AWD). As on the original, there is a mid-mounted V6 behind the driver, in this case displacing 3.5 liters and augmented by a pair of turbochargers and an electric motor sandwiched between the engine and the dual-clutch transmission. nine-speed. A pair of front-mounted electric motors (one per wheel) provide all-wheel drive on the road, and the total system power is 572 hp (427 kilowatts) and 476 pound-feet (676 newton-meters).

For the S-Type, we can’t imagine Honda being able to resist the temptation to exceed 600 hp and 500 lb-ft (447 kW and 678 Nm), reducing the NSX’s 2.7-second sprint to 60 miles by a few tenths. on time. We also imagine that the S-Type could potentially hit 200mph at the top end, compared to 191mph of the current supercar. There will be a host of chassis and suspension modifications to allow the hybrid supercar to take full advantage of the power boost, including firmer shocks, lower ride height, and super-sticky tires capable of take the track.

The NSX Type S will also be available in a finish-specific exterior color, possibly the matte gray seen on the microsite. The 2022 Honda NSX Type S will be built at Honda’s Performance Manufacturing Center in Marysville, Ohio, and production will be limited to 350 units – 30 for Japan and 320 for all other markets. Then, in December of next year, the automaker will retire the NSX to make way for other vehicles that will still deliver the “driving pleasure” found in the mid-engined supercar.

Like the original first-gen NSX, the second-gen example featured some unique ideas that would spread to other much more expensive vehicles. With a three-engine hybrid system, the NSX was more efficient than its slender form and wild performance suggested, paving the way for electrified supercars like the Ferrari 296 GTB. And like its predecessor, the modern NSX is comfortable and roomy, with the same decent ergonomics as its less exotic sedan and SUV siblings. For its part, Honda promises that more electrified sports cars are on the way, and I hope these new products find their way into our hearts like the NSX did.
