A newly elected mayor was caught on camera fighting with a taxi driver on the street in a horrific road rage incident.

In video footage, Councilor Shahzad Abbas Malik, Mayor of Crawley, is seen scuffling with a taxi driver in the middle of the road at Tushmore Roundabout in Crawley town center.

The mayor, who is a father of three, and the taxi struggled to the ground, with the mayor having the upper hand.

Police said the mayor knocked out the taxi driver and suffered injuries to his arms and head as well.

Sussex Police said a man was arrested for assault causing actual bodily harm but has since been released on bail.

Cops have since appealed to all witnesses following the scuffle and have asked any drivers who saw the fight or who may have caught it on dash camera footage to come forward. .

The brawl is believed to erupted on July 19 after the taxi driver attempted to cut off the mayor’s lane, a witness said.

The mayor, who was only elected in May and returned to office in June, has not been suspended from office and the main labor council has yet to comment on the video.

A witness said, according to The Sun: “The cab driver tried to cross his lane, and they smashed the windows before they started yelling at each other.

“It got out of hand from there, nobody wanted to get involved because it looked personal.

“He was going, it looked like they knew each other, but that was because the other guy tried to cut him up at the roundabout.”

Another source said: “After his behavior and acting like this, he will be lucky if he keeps his job, he has to be forced to quit.”

Councilor Duncan Crow, leader of the Conservative group on the council, told The Sun: “The mayor’s position is untenable and he must resign.

“Everyone in Crawley knows it’s him in the video and the behavior he displayed in one of Crawley’s busiest roundabouts is totally incompatible with being our mayor, a role where one should set an example.

“You just can’t fight like a hooligan one week and then go to a kids’ soccer event the next week and be presented as a role model.

“It’s been dragging on for over two weeks and if the Crawley Labor Group of Councilors doesn’t act to remove him, then Keir Starmer must step in.”

The mayor continued in office and even attended an open house on children’s football.

Mr Abbas Malik was announced as Crawley’s new mayor at the end of May and has been a local labor adviser since 2018.
