Authorities in Kano and Jigawa states in northwest Nigeria said a cholera outbreak had killed around 300 people.
Nigeria experiences annual cholera outbreaks during the rainy season, but the death toll this year appears to be higher than in previous years.
Overall, Nigeria’s Center for Disease Control says the cholera epidemic has affected more than half of the country’s 36 states.
Thousands of people have been infected and hundreds have died, most of the victims being children.
Northern Nigeria has recorded the highest number of cases.
The epidemic began in March but has worsened in recent weeks.
It coincides with a significant upsurge in Covid-19 cases and a doctors’ strike by doctors.
As the entire health care system is strained, authorities are struggling to stop the spread of cholera.
