Other deadly variants of the coronavirus expected to emerge – warns Wuhan laboratory scientist | Social

A Chinese scientist, commonly known as batwoman, has issued a stern warning that more deadly Covid variants are coming.

Wuhan-based virologist Shi Zhengli is one of the world’s top coronavirus researchers and has discovered dozens of deadly SARS-like viruses in bat caves.

She studied samples taken from some of the first people infected with the then mysterious new respiratory disease in China in December and found it to be similar to SARS.

Now, in a new interview, she has warned that more deadly variants of Covid could sweep the world amid fears of another catastrophic mutation.

Speaking to People’s Daily, the scientist said: “As the number of infected cases has grown too large, this has allowed the new coronavirus to mutate and select more.

“New variations will continue to emerge.”

It comes after claims that a new Covid mutant could emerge that could kill more than a third of the people it infects.

Documents released by the Scientific Advisory Group for Emergencies (SAGE) said future strains of the novel coronavirus could be as deadly as MERS.

In such a scenario, the virus could kill 35% of the people it infects.

The panel, which is advising the government on its response to the pandemic, warned that such mutations are more likely to occur when the virus is widespread.
