Two people have been confirmed dead after a tree struck them in a mining pit in Akyem-Asiakwa in the eastern region.

The deceased whose names were given as; Ruben and Atta, both 21, are in their final year of Asiakwa Senior High Technical School and Begoro Presbyterian Senior High School respectively.

They allegedly illegally exploited the Asiakwa Range of Atewa Forest Reserve when the incident occurred.

Asiakwa Coven man Kwasi Amofa said the two, who were external students, left their homes to operate the mine in the forest reserve on Thursday, but did not return.

Mr. Amofa explained that illegal miners dug around the tree and let it hang, causing it to fall.

According to him, residents alarmed by the turn of events launched a search for Ruben and Atta today.

He added that it was during the search that the bodies were found in the grave.

Kibi Divisional Police Commander ACP Twumasi Ankrah, who confirmed the incident, said the police had opened investigations in conjunction with the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO).

In the meantime, the bodies of the deceased have been collected and deposited in the mortuary of the Kibi public hospital for safekeeping.
