The Arewa Youth Advisory Forum, AYCF, reacted to the remark by former head of state Ibrahim Badamosi Babangida, IBB, that he visualized the next president of Nigeria.
AYCF described BWI’s remark as timely and commendable to have a youngster as President of Nigeria in 2023.
AYCF National President Yerima Shettima said Babangida has demonstrated his commitment to democracy in Nigeria.
In a statement he signed, Shettima urged other older statesmen to step aside from BWI regarding Nigeria’s next president.
According to Shettima: “The former president, IBB has proven that he is committed to true democracy and demonstrated patriotism, with this proposal to inject fresh blood into the democratic space of Nigeria today. We call on all former statesmen to line up behind BWI for the good of this nation ”.
Shettima noted that Babangida was expressing the opinion of millions of Nigerians who have been quietly disturbed by “the political culture of retraining tired old citizens as presidents of the nation”.
He noted that retraining old citizens as president was partly responsible for the current stagnation plaguing the country.
“We are all aware that in terms of leadership / governance on a global scale, the tendency is to have young, healthy and intellectually dynamic people running the business.
“We call on all political parties in the country to shun the culture of recycling old and incompetent candidates for the country’s presidency, as young people will no longer support this dangerous trend,” he said.
He explained that the era of the elderly holding reigns in Nigeria should be a thing of the past and, “whoever thinks this stagnation should continue, should perish this negative thought.”
Babangida, in his interview with Arise TV, highlighted youth as one of the qualities that Nigeria’s next president should possess.
IBB had said so while revealing six other qualities the next Nigerian president should have.
