The majority leader of Ghana’s 8th Parliament, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, has been elected acting vice-president of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA).
Ghana’s government affairs leader in the CPA Africa region parliament won a total of 16 votes while its lone candidate, Gerry Brownlee from New Zealand, had just 6 votes after the polls.
In a letter spotted by Myjoyonline signed by the Secretary General of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association, Stephen Twigg said that “the vote of the acting vice president of the CPA has been undertaken in accordance with Article 21 (6) of the Constitution, which allows for an election of the interim vice president in the absence of a formal meeting, an election to determine the successful candidate with a simple majority vote will be held by an email vote of the members of the executive committee “.
“The votes for both candidates have been counted and the results are as follows: Candidate A – Hon. Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu (Ghana) – 16 votes and Candidate B – Hon. Gerry Brownlee (New Zealand) – 6 votes, ”the statement read.
“As such, I am delighted to confirm that the Hon. Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu from the Africa region of the CPA, was elected by the executive committee as interim vice-president of the CPA ”, underlined Stephen Twigg.
The executive committee of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association is expected to welcome Suame lawmaker Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu at a meeting scheduled for September 27, 2021.
The statement further conveyed the Commonwealth Secretary General’s appreciation to all members “who emailed and voted in the election.”
