Kevin Smith’s expected Clerks 3 will be both black and white and color, marking a return to the black and white roots of the original 1994 film.
Filmmaker Kevin Smith has revealed that his next Clerk 3 will be in color and black and white. Smith’s third entry in Smith’s cult franchise almost didn’t happen at all, with Smith himself previously announcing that Clerk 3 was dead in the water. Luckily for fans, that situation has changed, and filming for the sequel has officially started in Smith’s hometown of Redbank, New Jersey, on the director’s 51st.st birthday.
Although Clerk II Arrived in 2006 with considerable enthusiasm from fans, the film still failed to achieve the kind of box office numbers that Smith’s original 1994 film did. Today, with CGI blockbusters dominating mainstream audiences, it’s hard to put into perspective just how much the release of Clerk has been. The film marked Smith’s first attempt to bring a feature film to life, and although a budget of $ 27,000 was still considered microscopic at the time, for Smith it was a considerable struggle to reap even that much. The results were a comedy that may not have a high production value, but still grabbed viewers with its humor, reliability, and new take on how a movie could be made. Thanks to Clerk, a new era of independent cinema has been ushered in, giving hope to countless filmmakers.
At the same time, regardless of the lo-fi of the output value of Clerk was, part of its charm was found in the fact that the film was not crisp and perfect. The grainy black and white gave it an aesthetic that carried a kind of authenticity, the tastes of which will be included in Clerk 3. With filming currently underway on Clerk 3Smith was careful not to say too much about the project. However, in an interview with Comic, the 51-year-old filmmaker explained that he would keep the nostalgia factor high by returning to black-and-white footage throughout Clerk 3. As Smith revealed:
“It’s both [black and white and color]. The premise of the movie, of course, is that they’re making a movie, so the movie they’re making is black and white. The film is in color, but [it’s black and white] when they pull their version of Clerk – who is called Inconvenience. It was the original title of Clerk. … The black and white film they make is called Inconvenience, this is their version of Clerk. Many of us reproduce the scenes that you know incredibly well Clerk, and the beautiful thing is that they are reproduced with the same people, and we are all so old. “
The decision to revert to black-and-white imagery is a nod to Smith’s past, but it also creates a sort of weird meta-frame in which Smith relives his past through his present. The aforementioned 2006 sequel was not filmed in black and white, which Clerk 3The inclusion of color and black and white is an additional nod to the franchise itself. Plus, by allowing his characters to make a movie about the life of a convenience store employee, Smith may have the opportunity to polish up some aspects of the original.
