Manchester City record signing Jack Grealish has said he can play in different positions for the reigning Premier League champions.
Grealish, who joined City for a British record £ 100million from Aston Villa last Thursday, told reporters at a press conference that Pep Guardiola said he could play in many positions and not just on the left side of the midfield, where he was mainly used at Villa.
“(Guardiola) said he thought I could play a number of positions and he told me,” Grealish said Monday.
“I think I can do it too, especially in a team like City where they have so much the ball.”
Grealish also said he was not taken aback by his £ 100million transfer fee and that it was a “good tag to have”.
“It doesn’t put any pressure on me,” he said. “I actually like it. It’s a good etiquette to have.
“When a club gives that money, it shows that they appreciate you. I just hope now I can repay this club by winning as many trophies as possible and this trophy that we all want.”
The Birmingham-born attacking midfielder made his debut for City on Saturday, appearing as a substitute in the 1-0 loss to Leicester in the Community Shield. Prior to joining City, Grealish had been at Villa since the age of six and had been captain of his childhood team since March 2019.
Speaking as he left Villa he said: “It was so difficult I think everyone knows that. I came back for the preseason as I had to, it was obviously difficult because I knew that I might be going, so I didn’t really practice.
“Everyone saw how Lionel Messi was yesterday, that’s how I felt myself.”
“I spoke to the hotel staff and team and cried, but felt it was time for me to move on. I always wanted to play Champions League football, I couldn’t do it at Villa this year and this football club has so much potential, they have so much confidence in me.
Grealish added: “It was (joining City) something that I felt I couldn’t refuse. Playing Champions League football and playing alongside people like Kevin De Bruyne, whom I have admired in recent years, and playing for the best manager in the world.
The England international has signed a six-year contract and will wear the No.10 jersey for the defending Premier League champions this season.
