The Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II celebrated the last Akwasidae in the United States of America.

Sunday August 8, 2021 was the feast of the Akwasidae of the inhabitants of Asante.

This edition of Akwasidae fell at a time when the Asantehene traveled on a visit to the United States.

Despite this, Otumfuo sat down in the state to observe the special day with the Asante community in the United States.

The durbar, YEN.com.gh met, took place in Rockville, seat of Montgomery County, Maryland.

Videos and photos of the Asantehene Akwasidae celebration have just appeared on social media. Like all of its events, it was a very colorful ceremony.

In one of the videos, the Asantehene is seen decked out in beautiful kente cloth as he sits as it is. Appellations were poured out on him.

Another video showed a group of drummers playing “kete” as some of the participants took to the dance floor to show off their dancing skills.

What is Akwasidae?

The Akwasidae festival is one of the two main celebrations of the Asante people and leaders of the Ashanti kingdom, as well as the Ashanti diaspora.

The festival is celebrated on a Sunday, once every six weeks.

On this day, the Asantehene meets their subjects and subordinate leaders in the courtyard of the Manhyia Palace.

The Akwasidae celebration comes just months after Otumfuo celebrated the Awukudae in style.

Otumfuo drives a Rolls Royce

As reported by YEN.com.gh, the Asantehene drove his 1935 Rolls Royce 20/25 when he went to Adum to perform rites in celebration of Awukudae.

The Awukudae celebration followed Otumfuo’s 22nd birthday as Asantehene who fell on April 26, 2021.
