Death of Doctor Strange # 3 features the Three Mothers – the Wyrd, the Crown, and the Creeper – described as similar to the Dark Order.
New cover art and character designs for three mystical villains are introduced in The Death of Doctor Strange have been revealed. Before the MCU’s big screen release Doctor strange in the multiverse of madness, Marvel will kill the Sorcerer Supreme in this six-issue limited series. The series will actually focus on the aftermath of his death and who will face the supernatural threats that the Marvel Universe often grapples with, and the third issue promises that some sinister villains will take center stage.
Marvel promised that The Death of Doctor Strange will be “perfect. ” The limited series will be written by Jed MacKay (Black cat, Tyrant) with illustrations by Lee Garbett (Loki: Agent of Asgard, Lucifer). Chain one-shots to The Death of Doctor Strange understand The Death of Doctor Strange: Spider-Man # 1 featuring both Ben Reilly and Black Cat, as well as The Death of Doctor Strange: White Fox # 1, with White Fox alongside Sword Master and Tiger Division, Death of Doctor Strange: Avengers # 1 and Strange Academy Presents: Death of Doctor Strange, who will tell how Stephen’s school of magic fares in his absence.
The three villains were revealed by Marvel Comics with the gorgeous and ominous cover featuring all of their disturbing presences by cover artist Kaare Kyle Andrews. Andrews recently returned to Marvel with his Amazing fantasy mini-series. The characters are designed by series artist Garbett as part of a team dubbed “The Three Mothers.” Describing each of the characters, Marvel’s official press release reads as follows: “The Wyrd, an alien mage priestess; the Crown, a powerful warrior queen; and the Creeper, a monster made up of sour mouthworms. “
Marvel directly compares these villains to the Dark Order of Thanos, and wonders if these are the beings responsible for Doctor Strange’s disappearance. While portraying a group of villains like the Sorcerer Supreme’s slayers would be an easy way to portray them as formidable foes, let’s hope they only serve as red herring to get readers off the trail of the real killer. After all, a mystery murder is a little less compelling if the killer is only featured in issue three rather than being a previously established character within the Marvel Universe.
It’s rather ironic that Doctor Strange is essentially at the center of two murder mysteries around the same time, one involving his own disappearance and the other revolving around the students of Strange academy. Rather than being the murderers, these “Three mothers” will likely become Marvel’s last supernatural threat in Stephen’s absence, and it’ll be interesting to see how they develop in character terms and what horrific powers they have at their disposal. Their appearances certainly promise potentially disturbing powers when The Death of Doctor Strange # 3 arrives in November.
