As many as 24 family members died from suspected food poisoning in Danzanke village, Bargaja neighborhood, Isa local government area, Sokoto state, Nigeria .

State Health Commissioner Dr Ali Innameon, who confirmed the deaths in a statement on Tuesday, said the incident occurred on Monday, August 9.

According to the commissioner, the incident was caused by the use of a type of chemical fertilizer, commonly known as “Gishirin Lalle en Hausa” as a seasoning in domestic family cooking which was considered to be ordinary salt.

“Unfortunately, the whole family that ate the meal lost their lives, except for two female members, who just tasted the food and are currently responding to treatment, with a very good chance of survival.

“Attempts to save the lives of all those affected by providing the necessary medical care have been unsuccessful,” said Dr Innameon.

“The ministry wants the general public to learn from this incident and always be careful, in order to prevent it from happening again in their families, as is now the case in Sokoto State and in Zamfara earlier in the year, “the statement read.

“It is very important for the public to know that this incident, although preventable and not contagious, is extremely fatal even with the best medical care and attention,” the ministry added.
