IMANI-Africa’s lawyer and senior vice president Kofi Bentil said the incidents that unfolded in the wake of the revelations of the ad hoc committee that probed Sputnik-V’s botched vaccines are clear evidence that ‘There are separate laws for people depending on the social class to which they belong. To.

“If the minister is subject to the laws of Ghana, he will not be at home; if you and I take 50,000 of government money and treat it that way and break all the rules, we won’t be home. It is not the person of the minister; it’s about nation building, ”he said.

According to him, the country has slipped into worse situations than those which had caused the several coups d’etat of yesteryear, so that the government is now refusing to deal with breaches of the law appropriately.

“What I mean is that we have gone through history to get to where we are and to establish the rule of law and constitutional governance. But over the past twenty years we have slipped into worse situations than we used to experience.

“This is why I emphasized that if we cannot deal with gross violations of the law, then we are clearly running a country where there are two sets of laws; there is the law of the common people, and there is the law of the mighty people. And there are people in prison today to do a lot less, ”he said.

Speaking on Newsfile, he explained that the blatant and continued violations of government procurement laws and other laws of the 1992 constitution by public officials with impunity without facing any punishment arouse public animosity towards the government. in power.

This, he says, if left unchecked, could end in a revolt, like the one the country experienced before 1992.

He said, “Samson, you remember the work we did on Occupy Flagstaff House, the work we did to establish Occupy Ghana, the work we did with the Auditor General to establish the rules on the surtax. and disallowance, going to court, still trying to tighten that thing up.

“God has saved this country many times from all kinds of situations. Because some of the places we get to, people don’t get there and end up in civil wars.

He was quick to point out that the calls for sanctions against the Minister of Health are not in themselves intended to slander him but rather to demonstrate that the country is governed by the rule of law and that everyone is equal. behind him.

“So I’m not saying it’s just one person; it’s about whether we as a country want to have a country where everyone is under the law, and we’re going to be honest about those things. And then also, we’re going to have a situation where people will think twice about taking that money and using it anyway, ”he said.
