Two people have been confirmed dead while another is in critical condition in an accident that occurred Saturday morning in Juaso on the Accra-Kumasi highway, Ghanaian police said in a statement.

The deceased were named Frederick Oduro, 38, and Kwadwo Oppong, 46, Konongo Division police said in a report seen by dailymailgh.com.

The adult men were returning from Accra to Kumasi when their Hyundai Accent sedan registered GW 329 -20 collided head-on with a KIA Grandbird bus registered ER 6000 -11 which was moving in the opposite direction of the road.

“Some of the occupants on the KIA Grandbird bus were injured and were rushed to the government hospital in Juaso for treatment,” police said in their report.

One of the victims was referred to Komfo Anokye University Hospital (KATH) for further treatment, the report adds. The bodies of the deceased were deposited at the Steward Mortuary in Yawkwei near Konongo.

The severely mutilated vehicles were towed from the scene of the accident.

This is the second time that an accident has been recorded on this section in the last 24 hours after a similar accident at Nobewam on the Accra-Konongo-Kumasi highway.

Four people were killed while nine others were injured and were sent to the government hospital in Juaso for treatment.

Road accidents are rare in the Ashanti region. Bad roads and non-compliance with the highway code contribute to the increase in the number of carnages in the region.

Figures from the Ghana Police Service’s Motor Traffic and Transport Department show that 295 traffic accidents were recorded between January and June.
