Algerian journalist Rabah Karèche was sentenced to eight months in prison for his reporting on a Tuareg demonstration, according to his newspaper Liberté.
Karèche was sentenced to one year, with four months of suspension. He has already been in prison since his arrest in April.
He was arrested after an article he wrote about a Tuareg minority group in the southern region of Tamanrasset.
They had organized a demonstration on their economic and social marginalization, linked to a land conflict.
Karèche was charged with “disseminating false information liable to undermine public order”.
His arrest and detention sparked protests from journalists which escalated further after President Abdelmadjid Tebboune called him an “arsonist”.
Amnesty International has described Karèche’s imprisonment as a blow to press freedom in the North African country.
