In Titans season 3, the team hints at a connection between Ra’s al Ghul’s return and Jason Todd as Red Hood – referring to past comics and movies.

Titans Season 3 saw the titular group theorize about Jason Todd’s return, naming Ra’s al Ghul in the process – here’s why they suspected a connection to the classic Batman villain. Portrayed by Curran Walters, the second incarnation of guest-star Robin in Titans season 1 before serving as a recurring presence in Titans season 2. After turning his back on the team, Jason returned to Gotham City and Bruce Wayne (Iain Glen) during the time jump leading to Titans season 3. Sadly, with his characteristic recklessness that prevails, Jason Todd was tragically killed by the Joker while going out of his way to prove himself.
As Dick Grayson (Brenton Thwaites) and others mourned the loss, Jason Todd was revealed to have already returned. Having adopted his iconic Red Hood character, the former Robin made his debut by violently taking control of several criminal enterprises. In the process, he used his new resources to wage war on the Titans. He initially led them to resounding failure, taking home $ 25 million while diminishing their standing in the eyes of the public in Gotham, former Batgirl Barbara Gordon (Savannah Welch) and her GCPD. Red Hood then drew the Titans into a direct confrontation – allowing Nightwing to discover his true identity.
After personally exhuming his grave to confirm it was empty, Dick reunited with Kory (Mame-Anna Diop), Dawn (Minka Kelly) and Hank (Alan Ritchson). Together, they reflected on the true nature of Jason Todd’s seemingly miraculous return. One of the options they suggested was that Jason had simply faked his death, to such an impressive degree that he even cheated on Batman. Another idea was that “a kind of voodoo act“had been used to”raise him from the dead. ”Starfire then agreed that Bruce Wayne knew people. Titans‘Batman directly caused Joker’s death in response, Dick dismissed the idea that he was knowingly involved. This led Dove to propose Ra’s al Ghul as a suspect. Dick considered this unlikely, stating that he was in Khadym. As comic book fans know, however, there would be precedent for Demon’s Head involvement.
In the comics, Jason Todd was resurrected not by Ra’s al Ghul but by Superboy-Prime, when the latter inadvertently altered reality by overlapping parallel timelines. Either way, a traumatized and amnesiac Jason was eventually discovered by Talia al Ghul. In an attempt to restore her health and memory, she dipped Elder Robin into the healing waters of a Lazarus Pit in which Ra’s al Ghul was already recovering. At the same time, the iconic villain has used his League of Assassins to cover up all traces of Jason’s return. the 2010s Batman: Under Red Riding Hood, however, restored and streamlined history. Ra’s al Ghul directly resuscitated Jason Todd in remorse for his role in his death. As such, there was a link between Ra’s al Ghul and Red Hood on the page and screen which Titans season 3 could adapt.
Ra’s al Ghul’s involvement also reportedly answered several questions from the Titans regarding Jason. As Starfire noted, Jason was always troubled but never the kind of outright psychopath who would orchestrate the death of Hank (aka Hawk) in Titans season 3. In the comics and the animated film, although the use of the Lazarus pit differs, it has nonetheless led Jason to go a little crazy. Therefore, the fact that Ra’s al Ghul was behind his resurrection could have explained Jason Todd’s increased hostility towards his former friends.
Likewise, it would have explained why Jason suddenly went from a clever hothead to a full-fledged criminal mastermind. As Nightwing stated, Jason’s level of intelligence was more cereal boxes than chess and chemistry textbooks. As such, the idea of Ra’s al Ghul quietly pulling the strings would have filled many gaps and perhaps shouldn’t have been dismissed by Dick so quickly. Whether that twist happens – or remains a pleasure, knowing the writers nod to tease the waiting fans – will be revealed in Titans remaining episodes of season 3.
