“Moon Knight”: Ethan Hawke’s “Good Lord Bird” Won Him the Villain Role

Earlier this year, it was announced that actor Ethan Hawke will be joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe as the villain of the Disney + “Moon Knight” series, opposite Oscar Isaac. Now, we are learning a bit more about how this cast came about.

Hawke recently appeared on “Late Night With Seth Meyers” and discussed how a chance encounter with Isaac, as well as Hawke’s work on the Showtime drama series “The Good Lord Bird,” brought the couple together. “I heard about it from Oscar Isaac, who lives, you know, three blocks from my house in Brooklyn,” Hawke said in the interview. “I was in a cafe. He came up to me, he said, “Hey, I really liked ‘The Good Lord Bird”. I was like,’ Hey, cool, I really like your job. You are amazing. ‘ He said to me ‘Hey, do you want to be in the’ Moon Knight ‘with me?’ I was like, ‘yeah.’ ”

“Moon Knight” tells the story of Marc Spector (Isaac), a former US Navy turned CIA agent who suffers from multiple personality disorder. He receives supernatural powers from an Egyptian moon god after finding an archaeological dig and eventually becomes a crime fighter in the United States.

The Escape of “Ramy” May Calamawy is also set to star in “Moon Knight,” which is directed by Mohamed Diab and “The Endless” and “Synchronic” filmmakers Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead.

Hawke’s appearance on the show is interesting, especially given some of his past comments. In August 2018, Hawke shared his belief that superhero movies are too praised by critics. In an interview with The Film Stage to mark his Lifetime Achievement Award at the Locarno Film Festival, Hawke displayed ambivalence towards the superhero genre and cited Oscar nominee “Logan” as an example too praised.

“Now we have the problem that they’re telling us ‘Logan’ is a great movie,” Hawke said at the time. “Well, this is a great superhero movie. It always involves people in pantyhose with metal sticking out of their hands. It’s not Bresson. It’s not Bergman. But they talk about it like that.
