The Census Bureau’s July retail sales data for July is also released this week, Tuesday. Economists forecast on average a seasonally adjusted increase of 0.2% last month, after rising 0.6% in June.

Economic data released this week includes several housing market metrics: the National Association of Home Builders’ NAHB / Wells Fargo Housing Market Index for August Tuesday and the Census Bureau’s new home construction report for July on Wednesday.
Also on Wednesday, the Federal Reserve’s monetary policy committee published the minutes of its last meeting at the end of July. Next, the Conference Board released its leading economic index for July on Thursday.

The Federal Reserve Bank of New York releases its Empire State Manufacturing Survey for August. The consensus estimate is for a reading of 26.5. This compares to a record 43.0 in July, when the general business conditions index rose 26 points.

America’s Car-Mart,
Jack Henry & Associates,
and La-Z-Boy are releasing their financial results after the market closes and will be holding earnings calls the next morning on August 18.
The Federal Reserve publishes capacity utilization in the industrial sector for July. Consensus calls for a reading of 75.7%, little change from the June reading of 75.4%. Industrial production is forecast to increase 0.5% from June’s seasonally adjusted 0.4% increase.
The national association of Home Builders releases its NAHB / Wells Fargo Housing Market Index for August. Economists are forecasting a reading of 80, the same as in July. The index is down from its all-time high of 90 set in November.
Federal Reserve Board President Jay Powell will organize a virtual town hall with educators and students.
The Census Bureau reports retail sales data for July. Expectations are for a seasonally adjusted 0.3% month-over-month decline, following a 0.6% increase in June. Excluding automobiles, spending is expected to rise 0.2%, compared to an increase of 1.3% the previous month.

The Federal Free Market The committee publishes the minutes of its monetary policy meeting at the end of July.

The census office The new residential construction report for July is expected to show the seasonally adjusted annual housing starts rate at 1.610 million, down from June’s 1.643 million. Housing starts hit a postpandemic peak of 1.73 million in March.
