President Akufo-Addo receives report from President of the Council of State

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo is studying a report prepared by the State Council regarding the $ 5 million corruption allegation against the Chief Justice, Judge Kwasi Anin-Yeboah.

The report, the contents of which have not been made public, was presented to the President at Jubilee House, Accra on Friday by the Council, will establish whether a prima facie case has been established for the Chief Justice’s impeachment.

The president, following a petition from the Alliance for Social Equity and Public Accountability (ASEPA), an anti-corruption civil society organization for the impeachment of the president of the Supreme Court for the alleged scandal, referred the matter to the Council of State to investigate the allegation and determine whether there is prima facie case for the impeachment of Judge Anin Yeboah.

The referral to the Council of State by the President follows Article 122 (3) and 144 (2) of the Constitution which obliges him to consult the Council to decide whether a request for the dismissal of a President of the Court Supreme or a Supreme Court had prima facie evidence for the start of an impeachment process.

President AkufoAddo thanked the State Council for the report and pledged to take a decision on the matter based on the Council’s conclusions.

“I must first thank you for the assiduous and punctual manner with which you fulfill our functions as Council of State. Few people have made the wrong comments about the position and efficiency of your body. I fully recognize the value of this institution and the work you do for me and for the country, ”he said.

State Council chairman Nana Otuo Siriboe, who presented the report to the president, said the council carefully considered the petition and accompanying documents before making its decision in the report.

Mr Akwasi Afrifa, a lawyer, alleged that the chief justice demanded a bribe of $ 5 million from his client, Nana Ogyeedom Obranu Kwesi Atta IV, to influence his case in the Supreme Court.

The chief justice denied the allegation and asked the police’s Criminal Investigation Department to investigate the case.

Nana Kwesi Atta also denied making the allegation against the Chief Justice.
