Don Everly, half of rock ‘n’ roll duo Everly Brothers, has died at his Nashville home at the age of 84.
A family spokesperson confirmed Everly’s death to the Los Angeles Times, but disclosed no cause.
A family statement said, “Don lived by what he felt in his heart. Don expressed his appreciation for the ability to live his dreams… with his soul mate and wife, Adela, and to share the music that made him an Everly Brother.
Considered one of the greatest vocal partnerships in pop music, Phil and Don Everly enjoyed worldwide success in the late 1950s and early 1960s, including Bye Bye Love and All I Have to Do Is Dream. Their unique vocal harmonies, paired with ingenious guitar arrangements and timeless material, have had a revolutionary impact on The Beatles, Hollies, Simon and Garfunkel, Beach Boys, Byrds and Crosby, Stills and Nash.
The duo, which had 15 hits in the US Top 10 between 1957 and 1962, have been described as “rock’s most important vocal duo” by Rolling Stone magazine. The Everly Brothers were elected to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in its first year, 1986, alongside Elvis Presley, Chuck Berry and Little Richard, and went on to receive a Lifetime Achievement Award at the Grammys in 1997.
Isaac Donald Everly was born February 1, 1937 in Brownie, Kentucky, the son of miner Ike and Margaret Everly. A gifted guitarist, Ike moved the family to Chicago in the late 1930s in pursuit of a career in music, where the two brothers performed alongside their parents in a band called the Everly Family. The group disbanded in 1953 after their fortunes collapsed with the death of the live radio market, but Don and Phil continued as a duo.
Although the couple broke up on stage in 1973 that resulted in a decade-long separation, Phil later said their relationship survived the tumultuous time. Two years younger than Don, Phil died of lung disease in 2014 at the age of 74.
