Nuno Espírito Santo has praised Harry Kane for helping Tottenham Hotspur to victory over Wolves in the striker’s first appearance of the season. With Kane’s future in doubt as Manchester City consider making another attempt to take him from north London, the player came on in the 71st minute at Molineux, where Spurs won 1-0 thanks to a early penalty from Dele Alli.

Kane was applauded on the pitch by traveling supporters, a gesture he returned after the final whistle. “He did well, he helped the team,” Nuno said of the forward who could have scored his return with a goal but saw his shot saved by José Sá. “He is always improving his physical condition. But he’s one of the best players in the world. You can see he helped the team in possession.

Nuno didn’t make any promises on the player’s future, even declining to say whether Kane would appear in the Europa Conference League second leg on Thursday against Paços de Ferreira. The manager said Kane is still working to regain full fitness, with the player returning to training later than his teammates apparently having a different understanding of his schedule than his club.

“He’s better today and he will be better tomorrow,” Nuno said of Kane’s physical condition. “He can still improve, we can’t set a bar on that.”

The manager said he was happy with the way Spurs fans received Kane. “I’m happy with the attitude of the fans,” he said. “We have to be together. We have amazing fans and we have to be thankful for that.

Meanwhile, Wolves manager Bruno Lage was disappointed with the outcome of the first game at Molineux since his appointment but was encouraged by the performance. Wolves created many chances but lacked sharpness in front of goal.

“The way we’ve created the chances tells me for sure we’re going to be good,” said Lage. “This is the way I want us to play. We’ve only had five weeks together, but what we’re doing gives me confidence.
