Professor Ransford Gyampo of the Department of Political Science at the University of Ghana revealed that the vice president and three ministers played a crucial role in the decision of the Association of University Teachers of Ghana, UTAG, to cancel its industrial action in recent weeks.
According to the secretary general of UG UTAG, Bawumia and the ministers of education, employment and national security showed what he called “enough leadership behind the scenes”.
In a Facebook post from August 22, 2021; Barely 24 hours before negotiations resumed, he further instructed the quartet to continue to maintain a keen interest in the month-long negotiation that begins today.
“The ministers of education, employment, national security and the vice president have shown sufficient leadership behind the scenes, pushing for the suspension of the strike.
“I would respectfully urge them to take a close interest in the month-long negotiation period and ensure that all stakeholders, but especially my people (university teachers), come out of it satisfied and smiling,” reads – partly in his message.
He warned that failure to address UTAG’s concerns would lead to: “A more deadly strike that garners support from all unions in Ghana would hit us all.
“The current harvest of emerging UTAG leaders (including my good self) are more socialized in the dogmas of mobilization and they know how to make an establishment ungovernable when necessary, to restore social balance. But we don’t need to get there. So to all of you, bondholders, in this period of one month of negotiations, ”he added.
UTAG agreed to suspend industrial action last week after agreeing to return to the negotiating table with the government. The National Labor Commission had to withdraw a complaint against UTAG as part of the negotiating roadmap.
President Akufo-Addo welcomed the suspension of the strike when he met with leaders of the National Union of Ghanaian Students, NUGS.
