A joint police and military team demolished large parts of the 3-story “Hong Kong” building near Makola Market in Accra, which was burnt down last month.
On Monday, August 23, the military cordoned off the area to demolish the facility, which housed more than 80 stores affected by the fire.
Some traders who were not directly affected by the fire are asking the government to speed up cleaning up the debris from the demolished structure.
They complained that they could not sell their wares because the cordoned off area is where they set up their tables to do business.
Traders admit that lowering the structure is a great idea. However, they want the authorities to speed up the process.
“We couldn’t work today because of the demolition. We are single mothers and the only ones to take care of our families. So if we don’t work, it will be difficult for us to take care of our children, ”said one of the traders. JoyNews.
Another woman who sells earrings and ribbons said loans were taken to start the business. Consequently, any delay in the works would make it difficult for them to repay the loans.
“We started our business with loans and so if there was a delay in getting us back to business, the banks would harass us and arrest us. We therefore beg the head of WADA to instruct the military officers to clean up the debris, ”she added.
