A Koforidua circuit court sentenced a 37-year-old taxi driver to 30 months in jail for speeding with a Ghana Police Department Transport and Traffic Department (MTTD) officer lying on the hood of his car.

The convict, Daniel Ofori, 38, was also banned from driving for five years.

He was convicted of two counts of dangerous driving in violation of section 383 of the Traffic Offenses Act 2004 and of resisting his arrest in violation of section 226 of the Traffic Injury Act 1960. criminal offenses.

He was sentenced to six months and 24 months for each count of competing and forced labor.

Presenting the facts in front of His Honor, Mercy Adei Kotei, the prosecuting officer, Inspector Gershon Defiamakpor said that the driver was declared wanted by the police for running away after committing a traffic violation.

According to him, the convict was spotted on February 28 last year at the Galloway crossroads by a community protection assistant driving a Toyota Corolla taxi registered GW 7484-14 from Koforidua township in the direction of Adweso.

He said two MTTD officers, Corporal Ofei Konadu and Sergeant Asante Peperah ordered the convict to stop, but he refused.

Inspector Gershon told the court that the driver instead attempted to run over one of the officers standing in front of the car.

Sergeant Asante Peperah, Mr Gershon said, jumped up and lay down on the hood of the taxi sensing the danger.

Inspector Gershon explained that the driver left at high speed for a distance of more than 350 meters until another car passed his vehicle, forcing him to stop.

He was arrested and charged with dangerous driving and resisting arrest, but was later released on bail after pleading not guilty.

The court, however, found him guilty after more than a year of trial.
