Network 10 has confirmed that iconic commentator Simon Hill will be involved in its coverage of upcoming Socceroos matches.
Australia will face China in Qatar on September 3 in what will be the first match covered under the new Network 10 rights deal that has made it the new hotbed of domestic football action.
While the Paramount Plus streaming service is not yet ready, the game will be broadcast live on Channel 10 and simultaneously broadcast on 10 Play.
Hill, who hasn’t called the Socceroos since leaving Fox Sports, will lead the coverage of Network 10 with Andy Harper, Mark Milligan, Bruce Djite, Alex Brosque and Georgia Yeoman-Dale joining him to form an impressive team of commentators.
“The FIFA World Cup is the pinnacle of football, and the Socceroos haven’t missed a final for two decades. It’s a tough but winnable group, and a good performance could set the tone for their return in 2022. “Hill said via a press release from Network Ten.
“The team is a good mix of youth and experience and the Socceroos have a reputation for being tough to beat in these qualifiers. They will need that resilience in this marathon qualifying campaign.
“The Socceroos are about to make some exciting new World Cup memories, and the countdown for Qatar officially begins here.”
Ahead of the game, Network 10 will also preview the upcoming action on August 29 with “Socceroos: Road to Qatar” which premieres on Bold 10 at 4:00 PM EST.
After the clash in China, the Socceroos travel to Vietnam with coverage of this game starting at 9:30 p.m. (AEST) on September 7 via 10 Bold and 10 Play.
Hill’s return to the comment box has long been requested, with the veteran caller revealing earlier this year that he is set to leave Australia due to a lack of work.
“I miss the comments a lot and want to come back to it? Yes, 100%,” Hill told The Jetstream TV in April.
“I’m 53 so I get along a little bit but I’m not that old I can still do it and I miss it especially on match day. So the last 12 months have been very difficult in this sense.
“Financially it has been difficult, but I was fortunate to have enough work to continue thanks to various parts of the football community.
“So part of the reason I’m still in Australia is because of the global pandemic in all fairness. If it hadn’t been, maybe I would have been back in the UK.
“Obviously we have the A-League rights coming up for distribution, if that’s the right word it should be decided within the next month away. If it goes elsewhere and they are interested in my services, I would definitely be interested in doing that and talking to them.
“If he doesn’t and he stays where he is, it will be me. I’ll be back on the plane in the near future for the UK, hoping to resume a career as a commentator there- low, otherwise I’ll have to do something else. “
Network 10 has yet to confirm when Paramount Plus will start broadcasting football in Australia but Hill confirmed he will be part of their A-League and W-League coverage.
