Frustrated drivers in Kenya have expressed their anger after spending hours overnight in a massive traffic jam in the capital, Nairobi.
“Ridiculous that I come home at 4 am” after 11 hours of travel, tweeted lawyer Pauline Otsyula.
Other commuters explained that they arrived home early in the morning just in time to go back to work.
Nairobi is known for its traffic jams, but Thursday night saw the worst that many residents can remember.
Videos and photos show irritated drivers still stranded on one of the city’s main highways, Mombasa Road, early Friday morning.
A tweeter said people parked by the side of the road to sleep in their cars.
Communications specialist Anthony Ndiema said someone could have taken a flight to Doha and worked two hours on the way home.
The traffic jam occurred on a stretch of road where a massive new highway is being built, but the traffic jam was reportedly made worse by a traffic accident.
Some have asked contractors to provide alternative routes while the work is being carried out.
While Gerald Ngui urged companies to let their employees who lived in the area work from home. “It’s the human thing to do,” he said.
The construction of the road is part of the $ 550million (£ 410million) project to provide a fast road connecting towns northwest of the capital to the country’s main international airport.
When completed, it will stretch for 27 km (17 miles) through Nairobi and is intended to facilitate the flow of traffic in and out of the city center.
It is funded and built by the China Road and Bridge Corporation (CRBC) – and the Chinese company will operate the highway as part of a public-private partnership.
The most affected stretch of road Thursday night connects the city center to the heavily populated suburbs in the east.
