NADMO confirmed the incident in a statement
Five people drowned in two districts of the Northeast region in less than 24 hours, officials said.
In Kunufor, a community in Chereponi district, three girls drowned on Friday afternoon. The victims, aged 16 to 20, had gone to wash clothes in the Lamm River, which runs through other neighboring communities in the district.
The girls, who tried to swim in the river, drowned in the process. Authorities say their lifeless bodies were found hours later.
Ghana’s National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) confirmed the incident in a statement.
“Their bodies have been found and arrangements are underway for burial,” NADMO said. “There were four of them but one of them managed to get out of the water”.
The deaths of Gurimpin Iwaak, Baba Kumba and Magelibe Baba shocked the people of Kunufor.
The development comes after a woman and her granddaughter drowned in a river in Najong No.1, a village in Bunkrpurugu district, also in the Northeast region.
The incident would have occurred Thursday, around 2 p.m., after a downpour.
NADMO Alhassan regional director John Kwaku said the bodies of Badisomah Damyee and her granddaughter, Priscilla Badisomah, were found and buried.
“She [Priscilla Badisomah] went to the farm with her grandmother and on the way home there was a heavy downpour… While trying to cross the river, they drowned, ”Alhassan told Citi FM.
“The grandmother’s body was recovered yesterday evening and has been buried. It was this morning that his granddaughter’s body was also recovered and has since been buried, ”he said.
Alhassan John Kwaku also noted that a drowning incident was recorded in the municipality of East Mamprusi.
On August 23, 2021, the eldest of a chef died on his return from his peanut farm.
“On his return, a canoe [he was in] capsized, and he also died in the process, ”said Alhassan John Kwaku.
Drownings are common in northern Ghana during heavy rains and the Bagre dam spill from neighboring Burkina Faso.
