President of the African Development Bank Group, Dr Akinwumi Adesina called on African leaders to strengthen their democratic institutions in their various countries to develop the continent.
Delivering the opening speech in a webinar on Saturday, Dr Adesina said the move will foster unity and cohesion on the continent, helping African countries experience sustainable economic transformation.
“Several institutional and governance deficiencies have long hampered the capacities of several African countries. Build the level and density of productive activity necessary for economic transformation.
“To experience sustainable economic growth and effective national transformation in today’s highly complex society, Africa must strengthen its democratic institutions,” he said.
He further added that “leaders must demonstrate integrity and fairness to all segments of society to prevent conflicts and threats to national stability and cohesion which in turn negatively affect the economic growth “.
Speaking on the topic “Integrity, leadership and stewardship for national transformation in Africa”, the renowned economist also stressed that Africa needs new leaders with new ideas to lead the continent to greater heights. .
Considering the many challenges facing the continent, in particular; debt, insecurities, unemployment, the Covid-19 pandemic and conflict, Dr Adesina noted that tackling them requires exceptional leadership, daring, vision and faith.
He said tough times demand leaders with the ability to inspire and capture the imaginations of those they lead and the creative ability to change the status quo for the better.
“One of Africa’s most critical needs today is to find new leaders with new ideas to help create a new Africa, a transformed Africa.
“At all levels of the human enterprise, we need a new generation of highly skilled, knowledgeable and visionary leaders with the right people for them. Leaders who have what it takes to lead the ships of organizations, institutions and nations. Especially in uncertain and difficult times, ”he said.
The Executive Director of the Uganda National Roads Authority, Allen Catherine Kagina, for her part noted that the leadership centers on three principles.
Drawing from the Holy Book, Miss Kagina noted that the role of a leader is primarily to be fruitful, to multiply, to rule, adding that “no matter where you belong, you must understand that you are a instrument in the hands of God “.
This year’s public conference on Transformational Leadership in Africa is the third since its inception in 2019.
The event was organized by the Board of Intercessors for Africa (IFA) and the Sundoulos Institute for Advanced Leadership Training (SALT).
