Married child who was convicted of murdering her husband has been pardoned

Kano’s married child, Rahma Hussein, was pardoned seven years after being convicted of her husband’s murder.

Ms Hussein, who was arrested at the age of 16 in 2014 and indicted in a Kano high court for stabbing her husband to death one day after their marriage, was sentenced in 2018 by Judge RA Sadik.

Judge Sadik ordered that she be “detained at the discretion of the state governor” because she was forcibly married and committed the offense at the age of 16.

Musbahu Kofar-Nassarawa, spokesperson for the Nigerian Correctional Center (NCoS) in Kano state, who spoke to reporters on Saturday August 28, seven years after the incident, said that the release of young Hussein was “based on the recommendation of the center officials who testified to his good behavior.

Kofar-Nassarawa further said officials also advised the state’s governor, Dr Abdullahi Ganduje, to review the circumstances that led to the commission of the offense and grant him pardon. He said the governor gave his advice and granted him his pardon.

Young Hussein expressed her enthusiasm after being pardoned, thanking the committee, governor and correctional center officials for facilitating her freedom.

She said: “I am grateful to the committee. Those in charge of the correctional center, who recommended me to be the beneficiary of this gesture, may God reward you abundantly. I am also grateful to Governor Ganduje for his mercy towards me. I’m happy today.”
