Former President John Dramani Mahama noted that police morale under the Akufo-Addo administration is low due to lack of logistics to enable them to tackle crime.

He noted that in recent times, armed robbers have become so emboldened that they terrorize road users not only at night, but also during the day, a situation which he says calls for swift action on the part. of the government.
The presidential candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in last year’s elections said in a statement issued on his behalf by his special assistant, Joyce Bawa Mogtari, on Sunday, August 29, that he received with utter shock the news of an attack on another tourist vehicle on the Tamale-Buipe road by armed robbers, resulting in the murder of an international journalist, Syed Taaley Ahmed.
The slain journalist, working with a London-based Muslim television crew (MTA International), was reportedly in the country to work on a documentary assessing peace and security in Ghana, when he encountered his untimely death . We wish to express our deepest condolences to his family and to MTA International, following the profound loss of their loved one.
“It is truly ironic that a journalist working on a documentary on peace and security dies of a highway robbery, which has become symptomatic of the violent crime that is currently ravaging our country.
“The now rampant criminal activity of armed robbers in the north of the country is a source of great concern as they are quickly becoming a daily occurrence. In recent times, these armed robbers have become so emboldened that they terrorize road users not only at night, but also during the day.
“Indeed, just days after this tragic incident, armed robbers, according to reports, attacked motorists traveling on the Bolgatanga-Walewale highway in broad daylight, stealing all their valuables.”
The statement added: “During President Mahama’s recent tour of the five northern regions of the country to thank the people for their support for the 2020 elections, he met with leaders, stakeholders, opinion leaders and religious leaders who mentioned insecurity on highways as one of the main concerns.
“President Mahama wishes to reiterate his appeal to the government to urgently address this worrying development. No one could have imagined that the tragic death of this journalist would follow so soon.
“We also note that despite the low morale of many of our police officers due to the lack of adequate crime-fighting logistics, the Ghana Police Service remains one of the best in Africa and, when it receives all the support, can secure our highways and provide safety. for all our people. We therefore call on the government of Akufo-Addo / Bawumia to take urgent measures to address the deteriorating security situation in the country so that our people can feel safe to go about their daily activities.
