Drake announced on August 30 that he would release his highly anticipated album on September 3, revealing the news on Instagram with an image filled with emojis that could double as a potential album cover. Boy in love certified will arrive just days after his collaborator-turned-enemy Kanye West Donda the album was released (apparently without Ye’s approval). Their two albums have caused tensions over a possible release date conflict.
The fans have known Boy in love certified for over a year now. After Drake’s release Dark Lane Demonstration Tapes, a collection of previously leaked tracks and demos unearthed, in May 2020 he clarified that Boy in love certified would be his next studio album, due out that summer. The rapper decided to take a little more time to work on the project. But now fans are about to have a whole new collection of Drake songs to show up and mourn. During the mysterious advertisement, an unidentified person simply held up a sign that read “CLB September 3”. However, it was not confirmed whether “CLB” referred to Boy in love certified, or if the video even had something to do with Drake. Suspicions were verified on August 30, however, when Drake confirmed the supposed release date on Instagram, stating that Boy in love certified will arrive on the first Friday of September.
The rapper made the announcement in an Instagram post, sharing artwork with 12 emojis of pregnant women all wearing shirts in different colors, created by British artist Damien Hurst, as seen on his Instagram tag. Some fans interpreted the post as the official Boy in love certified album cover, while others think it’s just a fun teaser, because nothing says “in love” better than 12 Baby Moms.
The artwork has already been turned into glorious memes. BROCKHAMPTON rapper Kevin Abstract tweeted what the album cover would look like if he was Drake, turning the artwork into 12 pregnant men (Abstract is openly gay). Lil Nas X then jokingly revealed Abstract’s meme as the cover of their upcoming debut album MONTERO, which falls on September 17th.
What is the CLB track list?
Drake has yet to confirm the Boy in love certified tracklist, but it may include the single “Laugh Now Cry Later” with Lil Durk, which was originally announced as the album’s first single in August 2020. A year has passed since the song’s release, so plans may have changed.
On who will be presented club?
Aside from Lil Durk on the album’s lead single, Drake has yet to confirm any other collaborators on Boy in love certified. But given its past repertoire, the album will certainly have a good number of top collaborators and artists, if the rumors are correct. Ariana Grande, Roddy Ricch, Jessie Reyez and Young Money alumna Nicki Minaj are just a few of the names set to appear on the highly anticipated album.
The drama Kanye
Drake’s feud with Kanye West dates back several years, but as they both work on new albums their little drama has reached new heights. The internet assumed they were arguing over the release dates of Donda and Boy in love certified (although no album was completed at the time), but no artist directly commented on the supposed beef until August 5, when West revealed lyrics apparently intended for Drake on his second Donda listening evening. “Stay away from my release,” West has been heard rapping. “Why can losers never lose in peace? No one around me loses sleep, better find God before he finds me.
Drake responded on August 21 during his verse on Trippie Redd’s “Betrayal,” making it clear that West was not changing his plans. “All those fools I’m tough that I barely know,” he rapped. “You don’t change a thing for me, it’s set in stone.” After the song’s release, West posted a screenshot of a message to Drake in a group text, which allegedly included the rapper. “I live for this,” he wrote, sending a picture of Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker. “I’ve been fucked with by nerd ass jock n **** s like you all my life. You’ll never get over it. I promise.” Just two days later, West doxxed Drake and posted his Toronto address on Instagram before quickly deleting it. Fortunately, Drake laughed at the privacy breach.
It’s unclear if Drake will shoot West on Boy in love certified, or if he will leave that in the past. Either way, West’s team should have waited until September 3 to come out. Donda, so the rappers could have really faced off in an epic battle to top the charts.
