Police shot dead two armed thieves and arrested four others, for their alleged involvement in robberies along the Kintampo-Buipe-Tamale highway.

The deceased, Hamidu Umaru and Haadu were killed after some exchange of firearms with police intelligence and operations teams while the other suspects – Saaju Bukari, Bertor Saabi, Ali Amadu and Isaad Seidu- were placed in police custody.

A statement issued and signed by Deputy Police Commissioner (ACP) Kwesi Ofori, acting director general of public affairs, said intelligence operations carried out by the special anti-task force resulted in the recovery of two locally made pistols and real cartridges, machetes, bayonets, pepper bombs and short pistols.

Suspected stolen items, including cell phones and motorcycles, were also recovered.

“Preliminary investigations suggest that these suspects were behind numerous thefts, including the murder of an international journalist a few days ago,” the statement said.

He said the police administration had put in place vigorous measures to “effectively combat the serious crimes that have plagued the region in recent years”, and explained that similar intelligence-led operations had been used in other regions.

“The police are a shared responsibility, therefore, we implore everyone to get involved for a safer and more peaceful society,” the statement read and advises the public to collaborate with the police in providing credible information on suspected criminals. for quick and immediate action.
