NCCE called patriotism important to national cohesion

The National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) urged young people to develop a sense of patriotism and nationalism to safeguard national cohesion and stability.

“We must preserve, protect and defend lives, interests and territories for sustainable development,” said Ms. Lucille Hewlett Annan, Regional Director of NCCE Greater Accra, in Sege in Ada West District.

The program titled “Empowering Ghanaians to Defend National Cohesion” was organized by NCCE with support from the Ministry of National Security.

Mrs. Annan noted that “our national values ​​for justice, equality, inclusion, tolerance, fundamental human rights and freedoms as stipulated by the constitution of 1992, avoid all forms of discrimination, reinforce regional, continental and global cooperation to achieve national cohesion ”.

She added that “the Constitution of 1992 is the supreme law of the land and it enjoins us to live in unity and to be at peace with one another, so that we can achieve development.

NCCE Ada West District Director Mr Philemon Boni told GNA in an interview that research by the Commission found that young people are turning radical and if not careful, they could degenerate into terrorism.

He said the NCCE, through the Youth Engagement Program, provided citizens with the opportunity to follow due process to resolve anything they perceived to be a problem.

“You cannot use powerful means to acquire what you think is yours or to which you are entitled; at the end of the day you could end up killing innocent people who are not even part of what you do, “he said.

“If I use a means of violence to demand what I want and someone else also uses the same means of violence, you can imagine the chaotic environment that we are going to create for ourselves and that would even be frightening. foreign businessmen to approach our country, ”he said. noted.

He said the first part of the wider education program is to organize a workshop with young people, organize cross-party committee meetings where political parties will discuss the need to strengthen national cohesion and organize public meetings.

Mr. Francis Acquay, Chief Inspector of the Sege District Police Command, also urged the young people to notify the police in time before organizing a special event.

He asked them to also make good use of the Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) to protect the relationships between their families.
