Kofi Agyei aka Jamalo allegedly inflicted cutlass injury on another at funeral
The driver of Suhum deputy in the eastern region Kofi Agyei aka Jamalo who allegedly inflicted deep machete wounds on Lower West Akyem communications officer Benard Kwasi Amoani during a melee at a funeral was arrested by the police.
He was arrested on Wednesday, September 1, 2021, while accompanied by a member of the ruling New Patriotic Party, NPP, who had surrendered to Suhum police.
DSP Eastern Regional Police Command public relations officer Ebenezer Tetteh confirmed the arrest to Kasapa News.
He said the suspect was in custody to aid the investigation.
Kasapa News has learned that the MP’s Ernest Lartey’s assistant was also arrested earlier but was released on bail.
Background
Four people were injured in clashes between two rival groups of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Suhum constituency of the Eastern region during a funeral rite.
The injured, including Bernard Kwasi Amoani, 51, a communications manager for the Lower West Akyem nuclear power plant, who suffered a deep cutlass injury to his forehead, were admitted to the government hospital in Suhum.
One of the victims, Alexander Odei, also suffered minor upper lip injuries.
The chaos was sparked when Frank Asiedu Bekoe, popularly known as Protozoa, and some party communicators and Serial Callers attended the funeral of the late father of one of the communicators identified as Opare on Saturday August 28, 202.
At the funeral, the MP and his entourage led by Constituency President Frederick Ofosu also arrived.
According to Eastern Regional Grassroot Communicators, “They have asked that they join the entourage of the MP (Hon. Oboafo Kwadwo Asante) in making jokes to the bereaved family since we are all cherished members of the NPP. After informing the PA in MP Suhum’s constituency of our decision, we were clearly informed that the MP does not recognize any of us as members; therefore, we cannot join his entourage to exchange jokes with our dear brother ”.
Alexander Odei, popularly known as the Big Deal, took the microphone to announce they were leaving on other engagements, but wanted to record that they had been barred from greeting the MP.
“At this important moment, we had no choice but to ask permission to leave the burial grounds for other equally important commitments. Our spokesperson was therefore invited to ask us for permission to leave the burial grounds. After asking for permission, our spokesperson expressed our deepest displeasure and dismay at the stance of the Suhum MP and his team of disrespecting the hardworking grassroots communicators of our beloved party in this disparaging manner.
Reiterating our discontent, disappointment and resentment with the member’s position, our spokesperson was attacked by force by a crowd of supporters of the MP who gave him an uncharitable abuse.

“These despicable individuals have also turned their attention to innocent leaders of the core communications team in the eastern nuclear power plant region in an effort to save our spokesperson from evil. In the process, the driver of the deputy seized a machete in the vehicle of the deputy and slashed the forehead of our colleague Bernard Kwasi Amoani, who was immediately taken to hospital for medical treatment ”.
Later in the day, Charles Gyasi, Suhum constituency youth organizer accompanied by Martin Odei and Ernest Lartey, all NPP executive members went to Suhum police station to report the incident.
Police and complainants went to the government hospital in Suhum where victim Kwasi Amoani was seen in the emergency department in stable condition responding to treatment.
Police medical forms were prepared and given to victims for approval.
DSP Eastern Regional Police Command public relations officer Ebenezer Tetteh confirmed the incident when contacted.
He said the Suhum Police Command was investigating to bring the culprits to justice.
