WELLINGTON, Sept. 3 (Reuters) – New Zealand’s third largest internet provider, Vocus NZ, said on Friday that its response to a cyberattack had temporarily triggered a widespread internet blackout.
The company said its systems were blocking a denial of service (DDoS) attack against a user, but in doing so, some Vocus customers in the country’s largest cities – Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch – suffered outages.
Vocus said the issue was resolved within 30 minutes.
“We are working closely with the provider of this platform to understand why this has happened,” said a spokesperson for the company.
A DDoS attack is a way in which hackers disrupt a server by flooding it with a flood of Internet traffic.
