• Live transmission of the petition for the 2020 presidential election was not budgeted for

• The CEO of the media entity says they are moving from bureaucracy to business

The Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC) spent up to GH ¢ 17 million on public service broadcasting in 2020, its managing director, Professor Amin Alhassan, revealed.

Making the disclosure during the second edition of the State Interest and Governance Authority (SIGA) media engagement series in Accra on Thursday, Prof Alhassan noted that for the live transmission of the petition 2020 election only, the station paid $ 3 for every minute.

Domestic operations like survey coverage, he said, were tasks the company undertook but did not get paid for.

” I am going to give you an example. For some reason, we went to court with a presidential request. The consensus was that it should be televised live, but no one asked us how we were going to fund it.

“The Chief Justice invited me for a conversation and told me I wanted this to be live and I looked him in the face and said I would send you an invoice. He said listen, I didn’t budget for it and I said if you haven’t budgeted for a presidential petition, how can GBC budget to broadcast it live, ”revealed Prof Alhassan.

“It was unpredictable for us, but once they asked us to do it. Every minute you watched the presidential petition live, the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation was paying a satellite service provider $ 3 until the petition was completed, ”he said.

Regarding profitability in the area of internally generated funds, he said: “We do not report a profit but if we were to report a profit, I will tell you that it is the profit that we declared. Throughout the hearing, every minute, $ 3 was paid by GBC with taxes. “

While emphasizing that the GBC was in transit from bureaucracy to businesses, challenges remained and they were determined to overcome them.

“There were a lot of older people who were more comfortable doing things analog. It was very difficult to deal with such situations as they also dedicated their entire lives to GBC. “
