NEW YORK, Sept. 5 (Reuters) – Play was briefly suspended at the outdoor courts at Flushing Meadows on Sunday minutes after the US Open’s fourth round matches kicked off, as light rain fell on the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center.
Two doubles matches – one on court 17 and another on the grandstand – had just started when tournament officials halted the action and most of the fans walked out of the stands. The disruption was brief and the players returned to the courts after less than 45 minutes.
At Louis Armstrong Stadium, 11th seed Diego Schwartzman and qualifier Botic van de Zandschulp continued their match under the retractable roof.
The disruption was a far cry from the weather disruptions of last week, when the remnants of Tropical Storm Ida ravaged all five boroughs, causing record-breaking flooding in the city and sending sideways rains to Louis Armstrong Stadium. Read more
