Mali’s counterterrorism police have been widely condemned after armed officers marched on a prison demanding the release of their commander – who was later released.
The exact circumstances of Oumar Samake’s release are unclear.
Some reports say the prison guards have stepped down, while others say the government ordered his release to avoid unrest.
Commander Samake was charged with murder for the deaths of at least 14 anti-government protesters in July 2020.
The interim government of Mali condemned the action of the “men in uniform and armed” of the Special Antiterrorist Forces (Forsat) in a televised statement, reports the AFP news agency.
The Malian Human Rights Association (AMDH) said it was “deeply shocked” and called this a serious breach of the rule of law.
